2010
WCBC was recently chosen by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) as
its 2010 Bicycle Club of the Year for Region 2 (DE, MD, NJ, PA, WV and
DC). This award is in recognition of WCBC’s rich, 37 year history
of: reaching out to the community to promote safe recreational bicycling
activities; offering cyclists multiple opportunities to engage in, develop
and grow in the sport of cycling; and advocating the rights of bicyclists
on a local, state and national level.
LAB also recognized WCBC for more recently
providing critical time, talent and seed money to assist Bike Delaware
to get organized, incorporated and functioning. If you haven’t done
so already, check out Bike DE at www.bikede.org.
Additionally, WCBC’s four annual fundraising
rides have allowed the club to donate over $7000 annually over the last
five years to organizations such as Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia,
Bike Delaware, Wilmington Urban Bike Project, Delaware’s School
Nurse Helmet Bank; Delaware Special Olympics, Delaware Autism Foundation,
Delaware Greenways, Rails-to Trails Conservancy; USA Cycling Development
Foundation, LAB and others.
Receiving LAB’s Club of the Year Award
is quite an accomplishment and honor. Congratulations to all the members,
volunteers, club officers and others who support White Clay Bicycle Club
and its mission--you’ve earned this award!
About the League of American Bicyclists
(Source: www.bikeleague.org)
The League was founded as the League of American
Wheelmen in 1880. Bicyclists, known then as “wheelmen”, were
challenged by rutted roads of gravel and dirt and faced antagonism from
horsemen, wagon drivers, and pedestrians. In an effort to improve riding
conditions so they might better enjoy their newly discovered sport, more
than 100,000 cyclists from across the United States joined the League
to advocate for paved roads. The success of the League in its first advocacy
efforts ultimately led to our national highway system. Its mission today
is to promote bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and work through
advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. The League represents
the interests of the nation’s 57 million bicyclists. With a current
membership of 300,000 affiliated cyclists, including 25,000 individuals
and 700 affiliated organizations, the League works to bring better bicycling
to your community. |
